Why Should You Always Rinse Off Salt and Sand From Your Golf Cart?
Corrosion: Salt from coastal air or sea spray can cause corrosion on metal parts, including the frame, suspension, and hardware. Even aluminum frames can be affected over time.
Electrical issues: Salt buildup can damage wiring, battery terminals, and sensitive electronics.
Faded finishes: Sand can scratch paint, windshields, and trim, making your cart look older than it is.
Brake wear: Sand can lodge in brake components, leading to noisy operation and faster wear.
How to Protect Your Golf Cart
1. Rinse regularly
After every beach trip or ride along the coast, rinse your golf cart with fresh water. Avoid spraying water directly into any electrical areas including the charging port, speaker areas, or any exposed wiring. If you do get these areas wet, try allowing it to air dry before calling for service. Often times once the cart dries out, the cart will function properly again.
2. Use the right soap
Choose an automotive-grade soap to avoid stripping protective finishes.
3. Dry thoroughly
Use a microfiber cloth or blower to remove moisture on the body of the cart. Only use the cloth on the outside of the cart and the tires. Remember to remove any tags from the cloth as they can scratch the paint.
4. Apply a protective coating
Protective sprays or ceramic coatings can help shield your cart from salt and sand damage. Ask our team about recommended products during your next visit.
Expert Tip from Capital Carts
If you use your cart near the beach regularly, we recommend a light rinse after every ride and a more thorough wash every two weeks. Preventative care saves money and extends the life of your cart.

Hurricane Prep
Golf Cart Storage Tips: Prepping for Hurricane Season and Fall Travel
As August rolls in, so do late-summer storms, travel plans, and the need to protect your golf cart from unexpected damage. Whether you’re bracing for hurricane season or heading out of town for a few weeks, storing your golf cart properly is key to keeping it safe, clean, and ready to roll when you’re back.
Here are some essential tips to help you store your golf cart the right way:
1. Clean It Before You Store It
Dirt, sand, salt, and moisture can cause rust or corrosion over time. Give your cart a thorough wash, dry it completely, and consider applying a protective wax or cover to exposed surfaces.
2. Charge and Disconnect the Battery
Fully charge your battery before storing your cart. For lead-acid batteries, check water levels. Put the cart into tow mode using the switch under the seat. If your cart does not have a tow switch, disconnect the main positive battery cable to prevent a drain on the battery while storing. For Lithium batteries you should also use the tow switch under the seat. If your cart does not have one, you can simply push the button, on the lithium battery, until the light goes off to prepare it for storage.
3. Inflate Tires to Proper PSI
Underinflated tires can develop flat spots when a golf cart sits idle. Inflate them to the recommended PSI and, if possible, slightly overinflate them to compensate for air loss over time.
4. Store It Indoors or Use a Heavy-Duty Cover
If you have access to a garage or carport, use it. If not, invest in a durable, weatherproof cover. This will protect against rain, UV rays, and flying debris—especially important during hurricane season.
5. Elevate or Relocate in Flood-Prone Areas
If you live in a low-lying coastal zone, consider elevating your cart or relocating it temporarily. Even a few inches of water can damage electrical components or short out your system.
6. Lock It Down
Even in storm prep mode, don’t forget about security. Use wheel locks or a steering column lock, especially if storing your cart in a public or unsecured area. You can also talk to our service department about adding a “Kill Switch” or “Unique Key” to your cart. A Kill switch is a hidden switch that shuts your cart down completely and prevents anyone from being able to use it. This is also great for parking areas where you are leaving your cart unattended. Unique keys are also important as most keys can be used in multiple carts.
7. Schedule a Quick Check When You Return
Once you’re back or the weather clears, do a quick inspection: check brakes, battery levels, tire pressure, and electrical systems before getting back on the road.
Wrap-Up:
Your golf cart is an investment—protect it like one. With the right prep, you’ll avoid unnecessary repairs and be ready to ride when the skies clear or the cooler fall breeze rolls in.
